Though the stars weren’t fretting about what to wear for the Razzie’s ceremony on Saturday, March 25 (always held on the eve of the Academy Awards has been at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, some nervous twitches must have rattled them wherever they may have been on this fateful night. Truth be told, none of them showed up. Why? Well, this was the night to see the WORST of 1999, the 90’s and the Century!
Dis-Honoring Hollywood’s worst achievements has been The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation’s
founder, John Wilson, job for twenty years. For this year’s 20th Anniversary as well as the end of a century, something extra special was of order.
Self anointed as the "Tinseltown’s Tackiest Anti-Awards Show", film clips, song and dance numbers, and quotes of terrible reviews were featured. All in good fun, of course.
The God awful Wild Wild West took home the most awards, including Worst Picture, Director, Screenplay, Screen Couple, and Song. To add some more salt to their well deserved wounds, the original and only Jim West, Robert Conrad, graciously accepted the Razzie Awards, " a gold-spray painted plastic raspberry atop a mangled Super 8 film reel with a street value of about $4.27" on the loser’s behalf. Chuckling as he recalled his meeting with razzed director Barry Sonnenfeld who told Conrad it was his intention to make this "his movie", Conrad quipped, "It’s all yours!". Also present was John Waters, the expert of bad taste, whose snickering could be heard throughout the entire ceremony.
Madonna and Sylvester Stallone received Razzies as Worst Actor and Actress of the Century, while Showgirls (it’s official!) is the Worst Picture of the Decade!!
