With its walls of guitars and raw energy, Source Tags & Codes, the third album from Texans And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead develops an uncompromising approach inherited from the Stooges, Nirvana and the Pixies. The Austin quartet, with the likes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, is part of a new rock wave that has decided to return to the music source that has too often been "bastardized" by bombastic and enticing ersatz.
The album offers a merciless succession of incandescent and furious attacks. A raucous voice, an avalanche of sharp guitars and pounding rhythms await. The group doesn't forget melodies either, sometimes melancholic, sometimes smooth, and they rock you in the middle of the noise. Sometimes even some anachronistic instruments such as an accordion or a piano are perceived.
"It Was There That I Saw You" opens the hostilities like a power drill, informing you of what's to come. "Homage" perfectly symbolizes the rage of this album somewhere between the Pixies and Nirvana while "Heart In The Hand of Matter" shows their more sophisticated side. The 11 tracks deserve to be tamed in order to appreciate them but once you pass this step, they're under your skin.
