An Ethiopian singer goes back to her roots with Gold & Wax. After her eponymous debut album, which had a subtle but distinctive electronic vibe, Gigi, who collaborated with the likes of Jah Wobble, offers a new collection of songs that claim her African heritage.

While this album will probably appeal to fans of African and World music, the issue here is that by sticking to a mix of African sounds and jazz, the album can't elevate itself to the level it could y adding in electronic sounds.

The arrangements are far from impressive and the ensemble sounds flat, indistinctive, falling into the trap of background music due to its lack of reinvention. Music can only survive and transcend genres by mixing them, and unfortunately what we're offered here is nothing more than what Peter Gabriel used to do over 20 years ago.
