Download Movies

Back in the day, it used to be that if you wanted to rent or buy a movie, you'd have to pop along to your local video store or specialist retailer and set up an account. While this was relatively easy to do, there could still be the odd occasion when the film you're desperately after is out of stock or unavailable. Now, however, thanks to faster networks and download speeds, downloading movies from the internet is one of the most popular ways to get new films today.

What Do I Need?

The wonderful thing about downloading movies from the internet is that all you really need is your computer, a decent connection to the internet, and your credit card. The faster your connection, the better - broadband should be a minimum, and if you have a DSL connection or faster, you can download movies in no time. So what are the best sites to use?

Free Sites

If you're unsure which sites to use, you can simply run a search using a search engine like Google Or Yahoo, and you'll soon find a whole host of sites where you can download movies. Some of them are even free - however, it's probably best to keep away from these so-called free sites, as more often than not the films have been illegally copied to the site, and therefore are no better than pirated versions of movies.

The Best Membership Sites

Just as there are various video rental stores that you can rent movies from, so there are equally as many different movie download sites, some of which are better than others. One of the most popular is The Movie Downloads.com (http://www.themoviedownloads.com), which has over 30 million members worldwide. This site charges a flat fee of $34.95 for a Lifetime VIP membership, with an additional $14.95 allowing you the option to burn your downloaded movie to either CD or DVD.

Another extremely popular service is Cinema Now (http://www.cinemanow.com), which offers a mix of movies, TV programs and adult cinema. However, there is a slight drawback in that it doesn't currently support Mac users, only PC's, and there is also an annual fee of $99.95 per year.

A slightly different option for downloading movies is offered by Movielink (http://www.movielink.com), due to the fact that you can download individual TV shows and you have the option of renting or buying the download. It can cost as little as $0.99 to rent a movie or show, and only $8.99 to actually purchase your choice. Add in the fact that it's like a pay-per-view service, with no subscription fees, and it's an excellent option. However, it only works in the US at the moment, and is incompatible with Macs.

Apple Macs and International Sites

If you are a Mac user, then apart from some sites like Movie Now that support the iPod format, you'll more than likely be using the iTunes store (http://www.apple.com/itunes) for your movie downloads. Prices range from $9.99 for older movies that are in the iTunes library, and go up to between $12.99 and $14.99 for the latest releases.

If you don't live in North America or Canada and are looking to download movies that are compatible with European servers, then one of the best is Love Film.com (http://www.lovefilm.com), which has over 65,000 titles to choose from, and has an extremely low subscription rate, which starts from as little as 4.99 GBP per month. With the ability to cancel your membership at any time, it offers a very viable alternative to the US-centric movie download sites.
